NBA 2K adds unskippable commercials

By Karl SmartOctober 22, 2020

It’s well known to gamers that the NBA 2K series is one of the best basketball video games on the market, but gamers also know that it is one of the worst games when it comes to microtransactions outside of anything published by EA Games. Well now NBA 2K21 has joined the stupid ideas market once again by adding unskippable commercials into the loading screens of the game, much as CAPCOM did with Street Fighter V.

The commercials usually turn up as part of a pre-game video, and while in previous years they’ve been for brands like Converse and the TV show Snowfall, this year it’s an Oculus Quest commercial that’s got fans upset.

Here’s a video of the ad running in the game, which will turn up regardless of the platform you’re playing on:

As you would expect, the community for NBA 2K21 has taken offense to this addition to a game that is not only already riddled with microtransactions but cost $60 to buy in the first place. NBA 2K21 is not a free-to-play game that would warrant such a huge influx of pay-to-play transactions, and now commercials on top. In regards to this terrible addition to NBA 2K21, 2K Games put this statement out on Twitter:

To call this statement bullshit is an understatement. This isn’t the first time 2K Games has tried to put unskippable commercials into its games. 2K Games has tried this tactic with the last 2 titles in this series, each time resulting in the commercials either being removed or the frequency in which they are played is reduced. Given that game sales are low this year due to decreased spending due to that virus, no one sees 2K Games giving up advertising dollars anytime soon.
